My people are from the Fish Clan of the northern Ojibway, the Anishinabeg, we call ourselves. My grandfather was called Solomon so my name is the diminutive of his. I am the son of Mary Mandamin and John Indian Horse. "synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title. Wagamese writes with a spare beauty, penetrating the heart of a remarkable Ojibway man. Indian Horse unfolds against the bleak loveliness of northern Ontario, all rock, marsh, bog and cedar. But in the harsh realities of 1960s Canada, he battles obdurate racism and the spirit-destroying effects of cultural alienation and displacement. For Saul, taken forcibly from the land and his family when he’s sent to residential school, salvation comes for a while through his incredible gifts as a hockey player. With compassion and insight, author Richard Wagamese traces through his fictional characters the decline of a culture and a cultural way. With him, readers embark on a journey back through the life he’s led as a northern Ojibway, with all its joys and sorrows. But Saul wants peace, and he grudgingly comes to see that he’ll find it only through telling his story. His last binge almost killed him, and now he’s a reluctant resident in a treatment centre for alcoholics, surrounded by people he’s sure will never understand him.

The cycle opens with the exhibition Les corps incorruptibles, by the photographer Emilie Hallard, whose images seek to offer a declaration of feminist, queer and anti-racist love for diversity, improbability, ambiguousness, the androgynous, the non-obvious and the non-binary. The cycle is a call to change and broaden conceptual frameworks, often highly restrictive, which impose ideas about what bodies should be like. Over the months of February, March and April, the programme offers a series of activities to explore bodily diversity, in all its joy and resilience. “Corporalitats” is a new programme of activities starting at the Barcelona LGBTI Centre on 7 February and focusing on bodily diversity. Pedigree and poor white trash: bad blood, half-breeds and clay-eaters 7. These poor were at the heart of New Deal reforms and LBJ's Great Society they haunt us in reality TV shows like Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and Duck Dynasty. White trash : the 400-year untold history of class in America. Reconstruction pitted poor white trash against newly freed slaves, which factored in the rise of eugenics-a widely popular movement embraced by Theodore Roosevelt that targeted poor whites for sterilization. Poor whites were central to the rise of the Republican Party in the early nineteenth century, and the Civil War itself was fought over class issues nearly as much as it was fought over slavery. Surveying political rhetoric and policy, popular literature and scientific theories over four hundred years, Isenberg upends assumptions about America's supposedly class-free society-where liberty and hard work were meant to ensure real social mobility. |
